In the beginning of the 20th century lord Bedford sold his grazing land for the expanding London, and this Bloomsbury became a neigbourhood of (poor) artists. Leonard and Virginia Woolf moved there and put up the publishing house Hogarth – and their artist friends came to live in the area.

In the North-West London, in Camden Town and its nearby areas, several derelict Victorian houses were on sale in the 1960s.  A new Bloomsbury was born when artists, intellectuals and new TV personalities moved there with their families. Oldest Gloucester Crescent residents was Ursula Vaughan Williams, the widow of composer Vaughan Williams, herself a poet. The theatre director, neurologist Jonathan Miller moved there in 1960. an author and playwright, national treasure Alan Bennett lived across the street – he let Miss Shepherd park her van at his front yard, and he wrote the play and film The Lady in The Van on this event. Here is an interview of Maggie Smith and Alex Jennings about the film.

The so-called-Behind-The-Scenes literature from the Crescent (also nicknamed in this case Crescentology is a genre that I have found most joy in. The nanny for Mary Kay Willmers, the founder of The London Review of Books, Nina Stibbe wrote a delightful, dry account (Love, Nina) on her years taking care of Mary Kay’s boys (whose father is the director Stephen Frears) and the idiosyncratic artists in the neighbourhood. Another example of Crescentology is William Miller’s (Jonathan’s son) book on his youth and family.

Alan Bennett can’t stand being called national treasure. He has said that even if he stabbed Judi Dench people would consider him a no-threat teddy bear.   Bennett’s spouse, the editor of The World of Interiors Rupert Thomas has prompted this dialogue after they had watched The Wuthering Heights together (a warning for LANGUAGE):

Rupert You are like Heathcliff

Alan: (delighted) Do you really think so?

Rupert: Yes, you are Northern, difficult and a cunt.

I like Bennett’s play and film History Boys, which covers the themes of outsiderism, growing-up, loneliness, literature and singular personalities in a fascinating manner. I also think that I am like Hector, the teacher of general knowledge – except that I am not gay and I don’t drive a motor cycle. Here is the scene about holocaust.

I saw Bennett´s play The Habit of Art in 2010 in London. It is about the relation of truth and art – and the lie in life – about composer Benjamin Britten and the poet Wystan Hugh Auden.

”The Lady in the Van” is a firestorm by actress Maggie Smith – but it deals with two Alan Bennett characters, too, the observer and the writer. In the same manner as with The Habit of Art, it dives into the deep wells of art and reality. By structure, these plays resemble other works with The Unreliable Narrator or Autofiction, like Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman.

There a are other autobiographical elements in ” he Lady in the Van” than Miss Shepherd’s unbelievable life – Bennett´s mother spent time at mental hospitals in the 1960s – she lived to the age of 85 at many caring homes, and Bennett with his brother were her surviving family members. Bennett´s acutely observant eye and ear catches the nuances of originality, suffering and otherness – another mentality than “this England” shines through, not always a semi-paradise, other Eden or a seat of Mars.

Bennett has a habit of harrumphing if something displeases him: - or it is his rhetorical device to express himself. When Nina Stibbe made a hilarious portrait of him in “Love Nina”, he commented offhanddedly that the portrait is based on misremembering – he was not always at the Willmers dinner table and he didn’t always come with rice pudding. (William Miller also remembers Alan at dinner table with tapioca puddings). Furthermore, Bennett declares that he is not a DIY man for broken bicycles or washing machines. According to Stibbe, Bennett was at first secretly pleased with the portrait but grew wary of people asking him to repair their bikes.  A satirist is the target of another satirist – there´s some multilayers for you.

Teatteriohjaaja, neurologi Jonathan Millerin perhe muutti sinne v. 1960. Kirjailija, kansallisaarre Alan Bennett asui vuosikymmeniä taloa, jonka etupihalle oli parkkeerannut Miss Shepherd, josta hän myöhemmin teki näytelmän ja elokuvan -The Lady in The Van. Tässä pätkä Maggie Smithin ja Alan Jenningsin haastattelua aiheesta.

Ns., keittiön-kautta-Cresentilla -kirjallisuus, ns. Crescentology on kuitenkin ollut minusta hauskinta luettavaa. London Review of Booksin perustajan Mary Käy WIllmersin poikia hoiti kotiapulainen Nina Stibbe, josta tuli myös kirjailija.

Bennettin puoliso The World of Interiors-lehden päätoimittaja Rupert Thomas onkin sanonut seuraavaa, Humiseva Harju.-elokuvan jälkeen, (NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN-varoitus):

Rupert :You are like Heathcliff.

Alan: (delighted) Do you really think so?

Rupert: Yes, you are Northern, difficult and a cunt.

”The Lady in the Van” on näyttelijätär Maggie Smithin huippusuoritus – mutta mielenkiintoinen piirre on myös Bennettiläinen metakerronta: Alan Bennett esiintyy kahtena hahmona kokijana ha kirjoittajana. Samoin The Habit of Art perustuu taiteen ja todellisuuden suhteen analyysiin.

Myös Lady In The Van- näytelmässä on elämäkerrallista ainesta, muutakin kuin Miss Shepherdin uskomatonta, todellista elämää.
